The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he dreads the worst. However, the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
